How accurate is a turbulence forecast?

Turbulence forecasts show where bumpy air is expected, not where it is certain. This page uses the FAA and Aviation Weather Center's own forecast products (G-AIRMET and SIGMET areas) plus turbulence that pilots have actually reported in the last couple of hours. A quiet area on the map means nothing was forecast or reported there — not that the air is guaranteed to be smooth.

Is turbulence dangerous?

For a modern airliner, turbulence is uncomfortable rather than dangerous. Aircraft are built and tested far beyond the loads that rough air produces. The real risk is being unbelted when bumps arrive, which is why crews ask you to keep your seat belt fastened whenever you are seated.

Where on the plane is turbulence felt least?

Over the wings, near the aircraft's centre of gravity, is where motion feels smallest. The rear of the cabin usually feels the most movement.

What time of day is turbulence worst?

In summer, afternoon and early evening tend to be bumpiest because daytime heating builds thunderstorms. Early morning departures often feel smoother over storm-prone regions.
